So I was just wondering if there was any advice on starting obsidian. What race would work good for a warrior, mage, crafter? I guess I haven't found discussion on races abilities and stats but I just need some advice on a good starting direction. I plan on making a crafter for starters then a warrior when I go back to school since my Internet will be faster there.
Thanks for any advice

Check the shard manual and topics in them youll see alot of the raw info on races, classes, skills and stuff.
I think the most important are these:
http://www.dxgaming.com/forums/viewtopi ... 31&t=22671
http://www.dxgaming.com/forums/viewtopi ... 31&t=19223
The topic under shard manual is pretty outdated for stat/skill cap so ill just explain that here.
As far as stat cap you just have to keep under a total amount of 290 and you have to manipulate str, dex, and int to what you feel your best fighting style will be...some people prefer healing quickly and having higher dex, some prefer hitting harder and having more life, so they choose more str. then there's necros and mages and tank mages and shit gets complicated from there.
basically 290 stat cap (str, dex, int) --> 680 skill cap (magery, swordsmanship, etc) for humans, 780 for races.

I personally would start with a Blacksmith/miner as they have very low upkeep. Only need a shovel or pick ax now and again when one breaks. Whereas with a warrior you need armor and armaments and a mage needs reagents. all of which are fairly expensive. But if you start with a blacksmith you can make your own armor and armaments to equip your warrior which can then hunt reagents for your mage.

your two options are pretty much a blacksmith or miner to make armor and sell it or give it your warrior character. Or start a warrior and go into the wild killing animals, skinning them and selling their meat to butchers...then once you have enough money for a set of armor or something you can go into the graveyards of cove and britain and fight stuff there, or the orc camp in cove.
for a blacksmith/miner you will eventually open up into more crafting skills and should you choose a race, check that class guide i told you to look at and you have to choose between an artificer or smith, and check the race guide to see what interests you the most, for a blacksmith you cant really go wrong with what you pick (i have a wood elf). Human is fine too, because you can gm anything, but you'll ultimately have one less skill to gm
For a warrior anything but warlock for your race is pretty good (most popular are human, vampire, and ice elf) and start your character under custom with 50 resist and I would choose healing as my other 50, and all the way str

Fisher would make more sense. By the time he can fish FFF and stat fish he won't have to worry about armor/weapon prices.

Yes, but also he needs FFF for that warrior and crafter. He also has no one to buy from as well.

fisher, alchemy, smithing, mining, cooking with those 5 skills your account should be set for life
Alchemy provides you with health potions, mana potions, poison potions, and - stat potions to control your stat cap + experimenting with stats.
Fishing and cooking will provide you with all the str you need.... + other stats for different builds.
Smithing for armor and repairing armor.

Is alchemy very hard to do? And is tinkering worth anything? I used it to make smith hammers and shovels but don't know if getting it 100% is worth the time lol
