HOW TO INSTALL AND RUN OBSIDIAN IN UBUNTU LINUX

*I created and tested this guide using Ubuntu Linux 8.10 and 9.04. however, if you have a general knowledge of using Wine with other operating systems... this guide can also be a reference.*

** Please also note that you MUST follow these directions in order! If you do not, you'll end up with overlapped files and a buggy mess. You MUST set up a Wine environment properly before installing or playing the game. If you already have the "winetricks" option installed as I mention below, just skip to the Installation section. **

1. SETTING UP THE ENVIRONMENT

- Open your Synaptic Package Manager, which you can find in the System/Administration menu on the standard GNOME desktop.

- In the "Quick Search" box, type "wine" and hit enter.

- Check "wine" and "wine-gecko" for installation and hit the "Apply" icon. Wait for the install to complete, then close the Package Manager.

- ** NOTE: Wine is an official "3rd Party" package for Ubuntu 8.10 and up. You should see it in the Package Manager. If not, make sure you are allowing 3rd party software. If you are running a different version of Linux or want to run the newest versions of Wine, see http://www.winehq.org/ for details on your version or to learn how to add the source repositories. The version that comes with Ubuntu should suit you fine for Obsidian. **

- Now, open a terminal and type:
Code:
wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks
chmod +x winetricks

Then run:
Code:
./winetricks

From this menu, select "dotnet20 - MS .NET 2.0 (requires Windows license)"(...and yes, you should really own a copy of Windows 98 or higher for this to be legal for use.)

2. INSTALLATION

- Download the Obsidian installer to your desktop or other location.

- When it completes, right-click the Obsidian40.exe file from that location and select "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader".

- The file should now be extracting in Wine and then ask you for a path. I used c:\obsidian but you can use whatever as long as it remains in c:\

- Delete any desktop icons produced after the install completes.

3. PLAYING THE GAME

- Now go into the .wine directory inside of home/whateveryourloginname. (You will need to hit CTRL+H to see hidden files.)

- Inside of home/whateveryourloginname/.wine/drive_c you will see the Obsidian folder. Open it.

- Right-click Obsidian.exe and choose "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader" again. The program should load and bring you to the login screen.

EDIT: Hopefully this will help new players on who aren't running Windows whenever registrations are opened again. Could a mod/staff please sticky this?

The site must have been temporarily down. I'm bringing it up fine on my end now.

Dont know if its cos im on newest Linux Ubuntu (Lucid Lynx, its version 10.04)

All i had to to was bring up a terminal. Type

Sudo apt-get install wine

Then install obsidian using wine, then start the game using wine. Nice and simple! :)

No idea why i didnt need to do more stuff now though, i remember last time i used linux+wine with obsi i had to tweak some and install some more stuff.

Cool! Good to hear.

Which version of Wine are you currently using, Ambient?

I have noticed issues regarding Wine and Ultima Online clients in general lately myself. Now at the Lucid release, I recommend that people install Wine 1.0 from the package manager, NOT Wine 2.0 for UO clients. I can't confirm this for Obsidian, but at least for Razor clients on other shards... Razor will not even install on Wine 1.2 loaded with all the .net winetricks. It's as if it doesn't even see them, which tells me any program that uses .net stuff will not function right.

I just tested and ensured on Lucid Linux that Razor-based clients work fine on Wine 1.0 with the Framework 2.0 winetrick, so I can be about 99.9% sure the same setup will still run in Obsidian.

I asked GMbob once about what .net framework Obsidian uses at this point, but I couldn't get a definitive answer.
