Since I haven't seen a post on this topic, I thought I might make one!

The skill cap for Obsidian is 680 total skill points.
Almost all skills will cap at 100 (when 'show real' is checked), but there are 1 or 2 which somehow manage to push on (Healing and Taste ID are the only 2 I can think of)
It IS possible to exceed the skill cap, especially by buying skills - but if your skill exceeds the skill cap, then you will suffer a loss of 0.1 to all skills!
The only way to lose skills is to eat forgetful fish - fishermen can start hauling these in at 80 skill. A forgetful fish for any skill will cause you to lose 10 points in that skill, or reduce it to 0 if it is lower than 10.

For every 6 months old your char is, you gain 10 more skill points to use. Every character starts as a 20 year old and gains a year of in-game age each month. So if your character was 26, you'd have around 690 points. 32 you'd have around 700 etc


For stats, the stat cap is 290.
This 290 stat points can be allocated in any way that you like - but no single stat can be 200 or higher.
Once your stat total exceeds that stat cap of 290, then you wil lose 1 to all stats.
To gain stats past 100, you must eat stat fish - your friendly fisherman can provide these at a cost once their skill is past 90.
To lose stats you need to drink -stat potions. These can be made from different resources collected from different monsters and mixed by a grandmaster alchemist (who will fail a lot!) - to make strength loss potions collect dragon blood (cut the corpse of a dragon); for intelligence loss potions collect daemon bones (cut the corpse of any type of demon); and for dexterity loss potions collect executioners caps (from giants/ ettins/ trolls etc).

Individual Stat Cap is 176.
But this can be raised above this by a few methods we shall'nt discuss here. The Risk with being at 176+ comes when you are blessed and an individual stat exceeds 200, as at a world save a check is made on player stats, and if found to be above 200 on any singular stat you will recieve a -100 to that stat as a check on cheating.

A good way to raise int is by wearing armour - heavy plate is best (60 str req for plate chest) - as it lowers your int while you wear it allowing you to gain quicker. And when at 100 (cap for normal gains of stat) int and you wear plate, your int is lowered below 100 allowing you to keep gaining up to 130. You could combine this plate method with a the feeblemind spell (lowers int) to allow you to gain even more int above the 100 cap.

Str and Dex can also be increased above 100 by having your stats lowered by curse/clumsiness/weakness (either by casting on yourself or a monster casting them or another player). If You fence while cursed/clumsied and at 100 dex prior to the spell you can continue to gain dex for the duration of the spell. If you become cursed/weakened and again your str is lowered below 100 and you either mace or wrestle, you can reach above 100 str when the effect wears off.
Basically, if you perform an action that takes a specific stat to a certain level, and you are below this said stat level you have a chance to gain that stat on attempt/completion of the action.

Total skill cap and how to calculate it

Supposedly it's individual for each char, so You'll need to overcap at least
once (taking note of all the skills at the last safe %, and checking if You
reached it yet after each gain) to be able to determine it for Your char.
Once ppl will start checking theirs, maybe we can finally see how/if
different it is.

First of all, presumably some of the skills aren't influencing Your total skill
cap. Those might include provocation, snooping, stealing, begging,
remove trap. I did testing with all skills zeroed except for the usable ones.

Now, any decimal point of a skill isn't counted towards total skill cap
(however it is added to the total number shown in skill list), except for
only 1 skill out of all. However 0.x skills seems not to be added at all. So
if You have 1 skill higher than 1% with say .1 in it, then count that .1 as a
whole point. If You have 2 or more high skills with decimals in it, then
again count them all as 1%. Even if You have .9 in all skills, that still
should amount only to 1%. Unless ofc there's some limit, I had decimal
points in 7 skills at most and they all counted as only 1%.

Then don't forget about vet bonus of 10% for each 6 months. It was
supposed to be capped at max of 20% bonus when it was 5% per 6
months, so dunno if max cap got increased with changing it to 10%. Must
say that all bonuses existed fine for chars I tested, at 5% and 10% alike.

A little bit about testing if You reached the cap yet. Easiest way is just to
open Your backpack, however a simple opening sometimes isn't enough.
What I found to work every time is when checking to open backpack
couple of times, then moving a bit, typing in .resend few times and
opening backpack couple times again. Do it after each gain when You
begin to near what You expect to be Your cap.

Finally few examples of how skills looked like at the last safe total %.

So for human char I had a skill cap of 671, with 10% for being 1 year old
it was 681 (tested 686 after another 6 months). For race char my cap was
751 (771 with a year old bonus - was tested recently after BB upped it).

Would be nice to know what others find their skill cap to be. If anybody
finds relation with those unusable skills, please share that too.

Just would like to add that I have no idea about the actual inside counting
of skills and total cap. This is just the best I could come up with after
numerous tracked overcappings. If You find some other pattern or some
wrong assumption on my side, by all means post about it. Hopefully we'll
be able to figure it out eventually.

well i see the stat cap is at 290 but when i hit 290 i lose 1 to ech stat so is this supposed to happen ,if so then tha cap cant be 290 must be 288-289 i ve had this happn now twice ...first time i thought i made a mistake but i know i didnt this time.

Nah man,you're mistaking..The stat cap is 290 I've been there severel times...maybe you micount them due armour or a changing stat spell.
Its 290 FO SOE

ive always taken my armor off when checking this i know i didnt mess up and its happened again and again so i guess at some point it will stop i hope but i know i was under 290 and still regained the stats back but i think im good for now anyhow thanx for the input.
