You gain magery skills by casting spells that are not too far below your current skill level. You can check if it is too far below by using the .skilltest command.
You will gain a new spell, in the order they are listed in your book, approximately every full skill point or two.
The exceptions are the 8th circle, which is gained in order of importance, and the spells mark, recall, summon creature, and polymorph, which all have reduced skill requirements.

Keep in mind the skill values below are for REAL skill values, so 30.0 magery real might show as 31.4 magery fake in your skill list. Make sure the show real button is checked.

You can see more detailed information in the graph below.

You do realize just how exploitable this is right? Like i can make a char with just enough magery to recall and never have to worry about a gain if i only recall with him. Or a crafter with just enough tinkering to make bottles or w/e you want to make with them and never having to worry about fff. Did you consider this, and would that be considered bug abuse? Oh and my wood elf is at 30 magery and he can't recall so i think there is something worng there.

You'll always get gains for casting spells you can just barely cast.
So i don't see what your complaint is. :P

Not really a complaint but more questioning. Like at a certain point if you only recalled would you not stop getting gains? And if you did that knowing you no longer got gains would that be considered an exploit?

No, it would be perfectly alright.
But by the time you hit it you'd want FFF anyway since it's quite a ways up.

And in my testing recall is castable at 30.0 magery. Real magery, not fake magery.
I'll update the main post to reflect that.

so how are u supposed to train magery when you hit the 90s ?
i liked magery gains the old way :/ this just makes it a art to train
and doesn't support the "play with your character and gain as you play" system at all :/

I'm probably missing something, but I just bought a new spellbook, and there are no spells in it. I assume we still have to find the scrolls in order for the spells to appear in our books?

you don't have to cast the highest psell you can to gain.
You just have to use something fairly high.
So no create food to gm.
But you don't have to do summon daemon to get from 90-100. You can use lesser spells. Just not too much lesser.
Find out more with testing and liberal use of skilltest. :P

only prob i see is that its harder to get to some of the spells thatn it was also..like before we could get all 6 circle spells at 60..now you only get a couple. but you do get one 7 circle but thatas it

Can you tell us what creatures will be available at what skill level for polymorph?

If it's already listed somewhere and I missed it, can you post a link?

And I think gains are still too slow or nonexistent.

I have 72 magic, and I casted about 100 reveals with no gains. Skilltest shows that when I fizz the spell is too easy, but when I successfully cast the spell I get no message, so I should gain sometimes on a successful cast, yet I don't.

If it's designed to gain that slow, then it's designed wrong because there has to be SOME kind of progress or folks will give up. 0 in 100 is far too excessive, especially give the price of regs. I'm hoping it's a bug.

I'd just like to add that during the time that I casted all those reveal spells for no magery gains, I gained 10 int going from 90 to 100....so it looks to me that there's more then one imbalance in gains going on here.

than i imagined, while magery stayed at like 50 =[
