is there no way a bit of coding can be added that would notify you or prevent you from creating duplicate names?

A GM will normally change one if the names are identical. However, because they are merely similar this is unlikely.
However, I have seen names changed for similar reasons in the past, so if it bothers you a lot I suggest you page and hope for a GM in a charitable mood, but even so I very much doubt they would be willing.
Someone created a character with my player char name once, and I pked them on sight indefintely. I suggest if it bothers you that much you deal with it that way
