This has been done a million times over, I'm sure... but lets tell some stories of our fondest memories during our early days here on Obsidian. It could be about anything you remember, be it the first time you got Pk'd, the first time you GM'd a skill, the first embarrassing thing you did etc. Speak your mind.
I'll start:
I had never played Ultima Online before, although I had been a huge fan of the DOS Ultima games since the early 90's as a kid. Being used to things like Super Mario Bros. and Contra, seeing something like Ultima with its almost real life game mechanics really blew me away. I was hooked. Due to lack of internet in my area during the mid to late 90's it was impossible to try out UO even though it was a goal of mine, I scrapped the idea after awhile and moved on to other things and other hobbies.
(Fast forward to February 07.)
After getting bored with Diablo 2 and the mindless hordes of minions and the click fest that ensued, I started thinking about UO again. I googled "Ultima Online" and clicked the first link, that being a link to Wikipedia giving an overall history of the game. Somewhere in that mess of a page I found mentioning of free shards and Obsidian being one of the shout outs there. As dumb as I was, I thought Obsidian was the actual OSI game and being free? Well I was bought. I downloaded a torrent for Obsidian, took me a day or two seeing as there was not many people uploading it but I finally got it installed and registered an account. Success!
(Logging in the first day: Warrior named Jesse. 50 swords and 50 tactics.)
"Hmmm a tutorial? sweet!" I payed attention as I was taught the basics, even though I already knew how to open my paper doll and inventory from my past experiences with the older Ultima games. I sold the peaches and kicked the shit out of chickens with teh skinning knife and "flew" over the hole. I thought it was pretty damned fun! I stayed in the tutorial for a good hour or more fighting the zombie with every weapon available to me to get the 50gp to leave. Took alot longer with weapon damage not being as strong as it is now.
I finally arrived in my new home, Cove. My first thought was "Holy hell, theres alot of people here." My shyness prevailed as I ran and hid behind the healer's shop and stood there for a good hour or so thinking of what to do, and what to say. There was a fellow player wandering around near my area... Suddenly I mustered up the courage and approached her. "Hi" I said. Instantly she said:
"Huh? your making no sense."
I said:
"I'm new to UO, can you help me get started?"
She then went on to say something about being stupid and almost understanding me. I was confused and wandered about some more.
Another player near the gates of town mentioned something about saying "Train" to train some skills. Little did I know that these "players" were actually NPC's.
I approached the weapon shop where a group of actual players were standing in a circle talking about perverted teen boy things.. They stopped talking as I interrupted with the words "Train" They all lol'd and said HUH?
I then asked: "train swordsmanship"
One of the guys responded by saying: "Okay, 1000gp"
I gladly payed the man with the hopes of becoming a master of this game as he then pulled a fast one on me and dropped a purple stone whilst calling me a noob for about 30 seconds, then poofed away. I felt like a complete idiot. Not only did I socialize with NPC's, I also got ripped off!!
Not to fear though, I soon learned about the graveyard in Cove and the wealth and fame to be had. Seen a lot of people come and go through that graveyard, some never to be seen again...
I did meet a few people that shared some of the same interests as I, and gave me tips and showed me some tricks about the game. One individual thought I had potential to join his guild, the Blood Wraiths (biggest noob guild ever..*coughs*) I was shitting myself with joy. I remember standing outside his house on Ice Isle with my bone armor and my green cape..
God I was sexy.
I remember taking trips around the world to all the dungeons with my guild and slaughtering every monster in sight. I remember one time Ashes came in and one of the guild members yelled "PK RUN PK RUN" I was like: "wtf is a pk?" I then saw what was happening, bolted my ass out of there and stealthed in a corner while I watched my guild mates run around like girls and die. lol.
Time would go on and I would run into my arch nemesis, Ox. Man did that guy make my life a living hell. I remember he had a noob char in Cove that would always talk crap about my guild and just down right burn us. This one time, a friend of his lured me out to the outer gates of Cove where Ox was hiding. He tried to wall but I slipped out where I stood proud and talked shit. The wall decayed and he broke loose where he then proceeded to chase to the entrance of Cove where he walled me.... and I pwnt him with my ruin double bladed axe. I was stoked. My first PK! I then was told NOT to loot his body because of the area I was in. Crap!
After that day, I was the man. It was my goal to hunt down and kill Ox from then on, because I knew I could. Little did I know, he had trained up and knew alot more about pvp then I imagined. Lets just say I died alot. Over and over and over again. He would find me when I least expected it. I started to hate the guy. I would have real life convos with my friends about him and my goals of killing him.
(Chemikill enters the scene)
Seeing how mages were constantly pwning the shit out of everything in their path, I decided to make a pvp mage to seek my revenge. Countless hours of training went into this char. Since I didnt know jack squat about macros, I trained solely by hand. Time would show that I could finally match him in combat... most of the time exceeding him! We then became friends, rather than foes.
Memories I'll hold dear to my heart.
(Sorry for the long post, shard is down and I needed something to do)
