By the way.. in LOTR Online the game... Rangers can not use swords or wear platemail. Instead, they use bows for long range, and simple hatchets or small axes for melee.

Yes, historically archers, specifically longbow men, almost always carried a side arm in the form of a small axe or hatchet in battle. The head of the hatchet or axe often had a hammer-like back in order to aid the set up defenses before battle, e.g. pounding in sharpened stakes into the ground. Also, armor was historically expensive; in the case of most European countries, especially England, archers were members of the peasantry, and therefore could not afford quality armor. An archer was usually limited to afford leather or studded armor if the archer wore any at all. In general, the archers were positioned behind the front ranks, which usually consisted of men equipped with swords and pole-arms. They were also sometimes positioned along the flanks.

ya i was gonna post what llama just posted..

point is there were 4 types of historic archers
most appeared in midievil europe

longbowsman/volley archers (think 300 archers)- used for large battles / siege warfare to lobby/ vault arrows in general areas, only useful in large numbers.
carried mellee weps that they were highly trained in.
wore armor depicted in Llamas post

marksmen- also used melee weapons as there main form of combat, but mainly bow , many marksmen can also accurately shoot at shorter distances from a mounted and moving horse (think native americans)
they wore little to no armor

hunter/ranger- self explanitory, they didnt wear armor, because animals were either to slow to catch them, or they killed the animals with one shot, they still exist and carry all ranges of weapons (from hand guns to knives) and what we have on obsi right now... not really used for combat

yumi archers- only seen in asia, carried small swords all the time,and sometimes carried katanas, there bows can be used for short and long vaulting type archery, they used there bows for 1 shot kills HIGHLY accurate, but can fire in rapid succession without losing much accuracy. can only shoot from stand still, mounted or standing, but can wear all ranges of armor from asain platemail (samurai armor) to nothing but a robe, depending on the type of warrior. and by far the coolest archer xD

and errrr i unno what you consider this but

knights- used heavy/ normal crossbows, for 1 shot assassinations, highly accurate, used for medium and short range combat only. the combination of armor and crossbow was considered so powerful at one point that it was a tool of the devil, and banned from use.


relating it to obsi-

we have a mixture of ranger type and marksmen type archers, which use no to little armor,

yet we see yumi archers use full sets of armor, but not really european platemail.

so what i say is make it so for a ranger to use his bow along with other weapons, but have them wear a weaker special type of armor that requires tinkering AND blacksmithing to make.

make it so its special jointed armor or w,e where the tinker adds joints for archery, but at the same time gives up some of the metals durability/strength, but not as week as chain mail...

basically an excuse to make an armor type specially for archers LMAO!
which can be tweaked to balance

Well there you go! I agreewith chips on two points, Either the warrior class should be allowed to use crossbows froma close distance, or special asrmor tfor the archer class

ya, maybe a bone armor... and different types of skele bones can be tinkered / blacksmithed to special types of bone armor

like,,, 300 bones for a set of armor around
and theres many skele types that can get many stupid cool bonuses if you think creatively
ideas just randomly thought of in 5 mins-

skeleking bones will make king armor-
which is like the black rock of skele armor LOL! and can be as strong as like val or verite but give no real advantage other then maybe boosted damage (by a little bit) and good AR

um

skeleton mage bones will make mage bone armor-
gives bonuses to mages and archers alike, archers maybe added resist? and mages better med...

errr

skeleton bezerker will make bezerker bone-
gives faster archery shots/ able to shoot from the move?(only if you have full set on minus the helm) making it better for warriors, allowing u to soak more damage with the increased AR but dance around warriors for the hour itll take u to kill them LMAO
but weaker against mages, (extra damage taken if a spell hits where the armor is)

umm dracoliche bone armor? LMFAO!-
it looks like bones, so i figure why not? same as skele mage but all better and stuff

skele archer will make archer bone-
should be most common really, great for archers fighting mages, higher accuracy but same AR as regular bone making it weak vrs warriors


the same concept can be brought to bows, and monsters, but i guess the different type of woods and stuff would do that

Alright, so can everyone agree with the archer class getting a special subset of armors, each one with a strength and a weakness?
For an archer to get the equivalent protection to plate, they'd have to carry around 3-4 sets of armor and swap out based on who they're fighting, so i think this can balance out, which is a pretty huge weight penalty given their relatively low strength.

I'll even throw in the draco and king armors as a little more AR than they really should get, given the rarity/break speed of bone armors.

archer class is so weak because of three points:
1. they can't use any xbows or heavy crossbows.. just bows.
2. they can't wear heavy armours.
3. they can't use any of melee weps.. like deggers or anyelse.

if they could wear a heavy armour.. will that balance the archery class?!
i think yes.. and id turn my warrior to a ranger if they enabled them to wear it.
