i think what they are referring to is the immediate side effects of an eruption, such as blocking the sun for a few months before the ash falls to the ground. this can have devastating effects CAN not MUST and the industrial era has caused more long term damage as what they are pumping into the sky doesn't just go away like ash.

though some volcanoes have caused very catastrophic events its my personal theory that the eruption of Vesuvius was the catalyst that brought the roman empire to its knees. but thats a different story

Okay. Yes a really massive eruptions can block out the sun, but only massive eruptions. The only two of which in recorded history that are on that magnitude was the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883, and the eruption of Thera, which brought about the destruction Of Minoan Civilization on Crete in app. 1600 BCE.

Secondly, the eruption of Vesuvius was not on this scale and occured in 79 CE, and although it destroyed the nearby Roman towns of Pompeii and Hurculaneum, was most definately not responsible for the collapse of the Roman empire. The western Roman empire was brought to an end by barbarians in around 476 CE. The eastern Roman empire was conconquered in 1453 CE by the Ottoman empire.

how could it be the catalyst if it happened for 400 years before the event :P

cause it could have :P I already said i would leave it alone so i will XP if I remember the finer details of my theory then i'll msn ya, but i lost the research paper i did on it 4-5 years ago  and dont remember much of it >< there was lost to do with air currents and how the dispersement of the ash would have effected the crops :?

What I refered to was carbon emitions. both from the erruption and from destroyed plant life.

Carbon emissions are gaseous, which i mentioned above. I was merely pointing out that you were generalising to large degree and that your comparison was very wrong.
