That's not true. The thief only becomes criminal if he is noticed stealing due to his low skill level, the lower the skill level the higher the chance of getting caught. You can be a GM thief and steal behind the player and would be able to get away with it.

Here are the OFFICIAL thief rules and properties:
* You can only steal from innocent players if you are a member of the Thieves Guild.
* To join the Thieves Guild you need to have at least 60 skill in stealing and have at least played 48 hours with that character. Also you cannot have any murdercounts.
* If you are not a member of the Thieves Guild you *can* steal from NPCs, Guildmates, opponents in a Guild War or players that are flagged grey or red to you. You can also steal from members of the Thieves Guild.
* The more armor you are wearing, the harder it is to steal.
* You can be noticed by any player or NPC who is within a 15x15 tile box surrounding the VICTIM. So thats within 7 tiles of the victim, square shaped. You can get caught on the diagonal compass points (NW,SW,SE,NE) at almost 10 tiles. See this picture.
* If you are reported for murder you will be kicked out of the Thieves Guild.
* To see if someone is in the Thieves Guild use the Forensic Evaluation skill on them. The higher your Forensic Evaluation skill, the more chance you have of finding out who's in the Thieves Guild.

From my experience playing in other shards, this idea about implementing the thief system into the game is fun at the begining, but after a while players get anoyed by it and the complaining will start. I don't think it is worth it, I don't like it myself. But anyways, let's see what others think.

About the looting in town, I agree it should be put back, or at least allow guilds at war to to do so.

Regarding pvpets: Pets should be limited to one when used during a fight. It is not fair for any player to fight 5 maybe less or more grizzle bears during a fight in addition to the opponent's damage.

I thought obsidian never had stealing? How can there be thief rules in obsidian if the shard never implemented it before?

If the system and thief is balanced, then there isn't a reason to complain, people will complain if everyone is a thief because it's easy to become one, but with the rules i've posted above, it won't be. Again, if people want this shard to be hack n' slash, and kill for stuff then by all means. I would prefer a shard that has many variables, many roles, and cases, not just walking around killing things. The only thing to offer an alternative to that is crafting, but I want something more exciting than crafting and not as dull as killing.

That is the issue here, for many years Obsidian hasn't been familiar with the word: "balanced"

imo stealing would be cool if done right. but remember, staff have a ton of stuff to worry about as it is, im thinking stealing wont be considered till bob has the other stuff in order. who knows.

According to Bob it will eventually be changed so that you will basiically have to be a tamer to control them anyway.

Right, this convo is getting about to detailed for something that's on the bottom of the staff's priority list. No point in debating it.

I'm a little late to the discussion but I LOVED some of the ideas you guys put forward, but sadly like alot of you realised it is close to the bottom on the list. Someday though it'd be great to see thieves added in but only after alot of testing and only if they're done just right.

Still...awesome ideas!

Staff has an idea for stealing that won't piss people off. HOWEVER that's just one aspect of the system and is technically already implemented, just not widely usable right now due to a lack of specific items.

That being said, please by all means keep discussion.
Just because something is the bottom of the list doesn't mean you can't discuss it, and in fact it is actually best to discuss somethign now. That way you have time to work out ideas and figure out how you guys want it, and staff can interject with balance conerns, so that when time DOES come around to put it in, we already have a nice idea that everyone likes hashed out.

I also love the discussion in this thread, some ideas are great and some have me wary, but i want to see how they hash out.

A few weeks late but all the same...

I totally agree, Bob - it's a terrific discussion. Thieves are something I'm very keen to see worked on, since they're a pet favourite of mine. So any ideas are good ideas!
