Post subject:  Character Freezing and Crashing - Tried All Solutions

Every time I go through a moongate or walk through certain parts of town my character freezes. I can't type, move, nothing. I log out wait a couple minutes and when I log back in I see my char, but I'm still froze and eventually the program no longer responds. I've read through all the support and troubleshooting guides and have done all the solutions...deleting Desktop folder, uo.cfg file, and having a friend hit me.
Unfortunately, none have yet to work for me. I then uninstalled the game and reinstalled it...twice...then logged into one of the frozen characters and was able to move him. I tried a second frozen character, but no success. What happens when I get frozen is usually done by walking through a moongate and then the screen turns completely gray. I wait a couple of minutes, but nothing happens and then I log out and log back in and my char appears, but can't walk or type or anything. I've stopped using the macros feature and it still happens. Any patch or software that I need to check? I know my computer can handle the game (3.0 GHz, 1 GB Ram, 64MB ATI card, Win XP SP2, 4.0MB Cable Internet). Is there a way to unfreeze them? And prevent this from happening again? It's extremely frustrating.

Thanks.
P.I.T.

are you running in win98 compatability mode? Certain sp2 installs that have a few specific hotfixes installed have problems running winGDI programs, such as ultima online, without compatability mode.

Also, try turning the music off.

I changed the compatibility for both the obsidianpatch and obsidian executables. The game would not start the until after I set the compatibility back. The patch didn't even start. Am I doing something wrong?

Probably a stupid question, but are all your system drivers up to date (motherboard, graphics, sound?)

Also, have you tried reinstalling the .net framework? Download the latest redistributable installer from the microsoft website.

Do you have Ultima Online installed on your computer (ie apart from OBsidian) and if you do (or ever have), are you using a 3rd party program to launch Obsidian? becasue these won't work and will result in your problems!

I'd recommend uninstalling, and then reinstalling the Obsidian file, and let it go wherever it thinks it should. Then just load it from the patcher.

Assuming that's been tried, delete your 'desktop' folder that is INSIDE the Obsidian folder, try again.

Let us know if those things help!

OMG I actually got something right?

I was expecting you to say "It didn't work" and then a dissapproving post from Duo telling me why my suggestion wouldn't work.

I had assumed he already reinstalled .net. It's pretty safe to reinstall .net after any patch of xp, or upon installing vista. Just because microsoft doesn't have it's act together on what parts get updated with compatability and what don't. So you have a lot of "updates" for windows, and some programs, that break compatability with .net when they install.

Add reinstall .net to the common list of fixes, if one exists. :P

I'm not sure if one exists duo, but feel free to create one and it can be stickied / added to in help/support.

"the 'things to try if Obsidian crashes, doesnt start, starts slowly, or does other weird stuff' thread"
