Here is a suggestion.
Pitch Linux.
If ur trying lookin for a good OS. Try Win 98 if you havent heard of it...
its windows xp with-out giant colorful helen kellar tyco gui's. Linux isnt really all its cracked up to be. The command line is a complete waste of time. I had Linux and several other operating systems installed at once and tested each.

For what it's worth, here is what my linux geek neighbor said:

I've experimented, with varying degrees of success, with Wine in the
past and I also currently have the latest version running. The thing I
have learned with wine is that Windows APIs are marginally transferable
in terms of porting functionality to Wine. The best thing to do, and
this is how I have had the best luck, is following the Wine build
instructions to the letter and build the install with an actual Windows
install disk. This may get a person further than what they would with
just the stock, cloned APIs that have been written by programmers to
work around the proprietary API issues coming directly from Windows.
Native windows APIs are going to contain a larger, more complete, level
of function in Wine.

Wine is no guarantee. NEVER HAS BEEN - NEVER WILL BE. Wine is an
emulation layer designed to run core applications in Linux under a layer
of 'compatibility.' Wine has never been the be-all-end-all for running
Windows apps in Linux. I've had a legit 6/10 ratio for luck in terms of
installing, opening, running and having full functionality. Some stuff
works, some just doesn't. Wine inherently has an issue with getting apps
installed with full functionality in Linux; you may get graphical
support, but next thing you know, you're spending hours trying to figure
out why audio doesn't work, only then to find that you have no network
support.

My greatest feats in running Wine: UltraEdit32, UT GOTY (with %100 full
functionality), Doom, Meade AutoStar Suite, and a couple of non-crucial
apps just installed for the 'lol' factor of running windows on Linux. UT
runs faster in Linux, under wine, than any time I've ever seen it run in
Windows. It's almost unplayable fast, I have slow the game speed
percentage down to compensate.

But don't let that mislead you in to thinking you've got a winnable
fight on your hands. Keep in mind, too, more layers==less speed.
Graphically intensive games are always going to be best run natively in
the OS they were built for. Every time you add a layer, you're
adding/losing precious cpu cycles. In gaming, well ...

Three words: VMWare, VMWare, VMWare. There are countless pre-built
virtual machine installs for most OSes out there. VMWare runs very well,
but it's also very expensive, and for good reason. Trial versions are
available and expire longer than after they say they do, and the full
versions ARE worth the investment. It's VMWare, unlike Wine devs, these
guys are WELL PAID to make sure stuff runs on other OSes. But the
average multi-user license probably starts at $500. Scouring the ol' web
can yield a few free VMClones or such, or what ever they call them. They
vary.

Sorry this is long winded, but you touched a nerve. Not being a windows
user, I've always liked the stick-it-to-windows mindset of Wine and how
they copied the code and made it work. But it's just that, a fix, and
not an answer. Good luck. Run Open Arena.

Cyber here. I hope this helps! :)

However, I have to respectfully say to ScArY: Whether we want it to be or not, XP is now the Win98 of the new millenium, my friend. Let's try not to be so hard on people who have other OSs other than our own. I will be honest and say that I have NO linux experience hence why I tried to get some help from another source. Just because all that I know is Microsoft doesn't mean there aren't different and possibly better coded products out there. I think that's all I should have to say right now... ;)

thank you for the output cybershaman. I'll have another try at getting Obsi to work under linux soon again, cant be bothered right now as im off for a week starting tomorrow. Atleast i got the main menu starting ^^ Then it just shutdown. :/

scary, may it be that your not techincal understanding enough to wield the terminal right? On my 5th day using (gnome desktop) linux ever and ive never been more pleased with my system. Its fast, 58 times nicer looking that any windows os & several times more secure. Only downside is ofcourse some windows apps doesent work emulated.. but then. you cant use linux apps in windows so.. anyway, i'll never go back to windows again thats for sure :)

this is an example of a fail post.

in almost every aspect of the word 'fail'

if you honestly think the command line is a complete waste of time, you didn't get much past 'ls -la' and you probably shouldn't be using any unix or unix-variant OS. Windows 98 can fuckin' suck it, and if you're going to suggest it, you should at least say Win98SE.

As for the original topic, obsidian can't and won't run successfully without the actual UO client; you cannot run it under WINE from just the website download. Contact a staff member about bypassing the patcher in order for UO to work (which will still be run under WINE, but the patcher won't).

The obs patcher is written in .NET, which WINE shits itself for support. Once you're able to bypass it, the game runs great under *nix.

Or maybe you could just do what I did - use Windows XP and change the theme to "Windows Classic" so it looks just like Windows 98 but...isn't?

Last time I checked, playing Obsidian without the patcher is not an option that is available to players I'm afraid.

Perhaps a multi-OS setup may be your best bet? It's certainly what I would do if I was tempted by Linux - not because I like Microsoft, but simply for compatibility reasons.

I would recommend a dual-boot scheme as well. If you barely use Windows, you could just install windows 98 or 2000 on a small partition of a hard disk and use that for playing Obsidian.

yeah, rebooting everytime you want to play 1 game is definitely no problem and makes perfect sense really.

or you could make a good suggestion like vmware

I gave the best suggestion I could with this and Ambients apparently novice knowledge of *nix systems in mind:

Perhaps the new client will be more *nix - friendly once released.

"VM" stands for "Virtual Machine". You will find a lot of information just using Google.

Players who run on linux have always been open to play on obsidian, they were just required to contact staff to get put on the whitelist of people who do not have to use the patcher, as well as agree to follow certain rules.
i.e. check news, patchregularly, etc.

However the 4.0 will indeed be much much more linux friendly.
