I think at one time they had 2 servers running. One acting as a "test server". That was so long ago though that I can't even remember why they did it and there hasn't been a 2nd server since that I know of. |

There is a test server and when needed we have people hop on it. But that's very rare. |

Blob is right, any code that needs testing or might be dangerous is developed on the test server, then moved to the live server when it's perfected. You wouldn't want the game server crashing because your staff are developing stuff, likewise there's a lot of stuff we couldn't reliably test on the gameserver without imbalancing things a bit. Today's borking arised from code not entirely transffering right, so even though the version tested fine, it didn't properly update the last changes and therefore spamming a bunch of debug code that should have been deactivated. Big systems like crafting/etc are developed entirely on the test server before they're launched and moved to the public server, since they require making changes to systems in part and are hardly done in a day or week usually. |
