I'm not sure if it is just me or if something is bugged or been changed but footsteps on horseback no longer make any sound.

You should check your footsteps sound thing in options see if its unchecked lol...

But in reality its probably because the horses evolved and are now sneaky ferrets.

OMG i am a f****** noob. I have been playing this game for about 6 years or so and i think i might have glanced over that a million times and never even clued in.
