The reason why peeople stopped to play is because of the lag and lack of players online...

Without any lag and with few players online, the shard with lots of players would start to play again.

Ultima Online is the first Online rpg where u can Pvp/Pvm and make clan that gank each others and will always be one of the best Rpg!!!

Too many old gamers looking to play Ultima Online into a not laggy Shard full of online players but cannot find any shard to play!!

The best would be to add a place on this forum where players can pay Donation that will be held till there is enough money to run Obsidian from a T1 server allowing 1000 online players+ without any lags...

T1 server are used at school and big compagny but cost so much money a month.
If we could get enough money from donation to run Obsidian from a T1 server, Obsidian would became the biggest Ultima shard alive with huge clan gank and would grow up so fast with 500 players+ online a days easy...

Ultima Online is so nice speacially Obsidian, I cant believe its gonna die and not become very big and famous...

Redoing anything would just way to much time that is not needed. Plus a lot of people would stop playing that took years to max there account.

Hire some staff. I'm sure there are a lot of vets that are willing to help out that knows uo in and out. Even if just to run events.

need to get obsidian out there again. Need to run a couple player drives and get people playing. So avertisment would be great. I would donate to that in a heartbeat.

Me and a lot of people have stoped playing because there is no one on. If people start playing a lot of the old people would quit what ever there playing and come back.

Bob i know you put as much time as you can into this game. But the last couple years it has not been enough. You need to have someone else besides you to script and update the game.

Fixing bugs and everything is great is all. But whats the point when know one plays? Best part of obsidian is when we had huge bugs. *bottle dupe* *invul bug* So getting players needs to be the first thing on the list. Then let them report what they find and fix it. We don't need to start over we need to take the shard what is was years ago.

The game has changed way to much and i think that's what drove a lot of the player base off. I always see people posting and looking for a old school uo to play. And i would love to point them this way. But there not going to take a second look when the last update from a staff was over a year ago.

All the stuff you have added mostly have been good. But remember the best point of this game is when we didin't have all of that. Its when we had daily events.

I would like to see new staff added, also we need you to invest time to fix major bugs and just make game self sustaining cause atm it is not, players cant even join due to account creation down. Than once its self sustaining we need to do some advertising and rebuild.

I'm somewhere between #2 and #3. I would encourage you to keep the game going in whatever shape or form can be managed.

In #3 when you say "remake obsidian" - what do you mean exactly? My initial image some kind of cloning on a RunUO server. That's not necessarily a bad thing. I play on those servers from time to time and they are not all dire-watered-down versions of the UO we all love. As long as characters are not dressed in rainbows and riding dragons - I'd be cool with that. At the very least, they are usually stable and updated regularly.

Staff - I know you guys don't get to devote as much attention to this as you would like (similarly, us players don't always get on as often as we would like!) but I think you all do a great job and appreciate your efforts greatly.

My thanks to you all :)

(Also chaps - I shot you guys a PM with a question, if you could get back to me when you get a moment)

I'm leaning towards #2.

I really don't want the game to have a overhaul of look or feel. I like the old interface just fine. What I would want though is just more added to the existing game such as additional features, items, NPC quests, etc, registration fixed and most importantly for people to want to come back to play.

I think I've mentioned not too long ago that it might not be a bad idea to have a summary of what people don't like (polymorph dispel, potion timers, or whatever) and a summary of what's just plain broke. We address the list, in the meantime fixing registration (or enabling a different system if the old can't be fixed?) and then start our new advertising campaign. With the arrival of Shroud of the Avatar soon, I'm seeing a lot of new hype on social media outlets about Ultima Online. Not any 3D remake or whatever.. but original, two-dimensional Ultima Online.

As far as the client software getting outdated, I'm always able to find some sort of trick to get the client working on just about any platform. We keep the client well-documented no matter how outdated and people should be fine. The last thing we want is a newer, fancier and more bloated client. At one point we may be running the 2-d client on phones or other non-desktop devices. I don't have any protest though to any update that makes the client more stable, if need be.

Stability too brings up Sphere server software. I'm not half as familiar with it as I am RunUO, but I see that it still has a following. As long as there is not a SaveGame wipe, I'd be happy to see any new Sphere upgrades implemented so long as they don't interfere with your current and future customizations.

Also, I can probably help if need be with non-staff duties you need, primarily if we need some coding done to the patcher or client.. or even re-do the server structure to use something like Amazon Web Services server instances to off-load some of the Obsidian services. Just let me know.

Everyone here has valid points so I figure I'd chime in.

I appreciate Bob keeping the "if people are still playing...." promise however my personal opinion is that this isn't the case any longer. I've checked server and forums from time to time hoping to be surprised while presented a dead server. Had I been still running the physical game server it likely would have gone down long before.

Obsidian is 13 years old, Ultima Online old enough to buy cigarettes and technology and gaming have moved on. It's not surprising, but what is, is Obsidian survived and was enjoyed for such a long time. Longer than most MMOs out there (see Warhammer Online).

We've all had amazing experiences, made lifelong friends and moved on. As much as trying to bring it back to its former glory sounds appealing, I don't think it would ever match what it was. In the end all we'd be doing is prolonging the inevitable at the expense of the torment of those trying to revive it.

My suggestion would be this:

Turn Obsidian into a guild/gaming group and bring both its memory and players to UO's spiritual successor Shroud of the Avatar. If that is too far out, find a fun free alternative to start on prior to its launch. I would love to play alongside you guys and would be more than happy to offer the resources of a guild website, Mumble server, forums etc to make that happen.

I'm almost certain Cybervic would join me and maybe even other prior staff.

I think this could be a blast!

Well players can only do a certain amount to bring this game back, and we've tried. It's just getting staff members who want to help and bring it back, even if it cant be braught back like it was, im sure it can still be fun. I know tons of people who would love to help including myself. This game is old but can still come back, we just need people to help put an effort towards it.

If you decide to shut it down and forget about it then id suggest handing it over to someone who has the time to fix/keep it up. Dont just throw it away.

I am in.

For the coding too. I'm into IT atm ;)

Btw I couldnt retrieve the password for my old account. Would somebody help please?

Forgot passwd email is not coming in. :P

Much appreciate.

Luv u all.

Count me in for whatever u want /marketing/cash/coding .

I suggest btw to keep it simple as it is right now. No switching to new ERAs, or we are loosing the whole point of this
community.

There's still lots of shards that run on t3a/t2a/t4a so we can do the same.

Just needs a bit of tweaking and some active coders. ;)

This suprised me. Seems like a strong opinion on retiring the shard - that would be quite sad.

Personally I'm not done with this game, not by a long way. If Obsidian does go out to pasture, I would go elswhere - but it would not be the same.

I don't really know BB too well but with the shard having run for so long anyway, my assumption was that you would be an advocate a keeping it running may be even pitching in where you can while it struggles (I would guess you still do this though but you probably have limited time available like most of us).

I think Jizaboz has made a few good points here. I know he has a fair bit of UO know-how - your offer to assist is very generous of you sir! :)

I honestly thought this was a joke at first.

We are trying to save a 13 year old game because no other game can compare to obsidian. I could be out there playing Darkfall,Wow,Guild wars you name it. But i would rather play this. Like everyone else that wants to come back here. So why would we vote to kill it off and tun obsidian into a guild or w/e to play another game? Bold suggestion for someone who hasint been here for years. So i really doubt your going to get any votes to you *suggestion*

I understand that the game wont late forever it will have to be shut down one of these days. But i will play it until that day does happen. But as of right now. We have players wanting to play and help get this game back to its former glory. So lets get into gear and fix it.
