Hammerpicks are the gods of mace, it hits a tonne, not too slow and you can wear a shield too. The regular shop bought or player made hammerpicks are 2 handed though. So stick to a nice 1 handed magical pick.

Warhammers are great too, its 2 handed, slower, but hits a hell of a lot. Likewise for War axes. Hit very hard, seem a little faster than war hammers.

The rest are absolute pish. Mauls, mace, war mace. All slow, hit for peanuts. I'd much ra5ther have a +1 hammerpick than a +9 mace/maul/war mace.

Honesltly i prefer the warhammer for pvp becasue its critical hits are out rageous and for pvm it kinda sucks cuz it hits so slow so i use war axes and hammer picks...but hammer picks and war axes can own in pvp just as much...thats just what i use

EDIT- ok umm i forgot to say if you are not gm...the best way to train with mace is with a smith hammer...it gets good gains and is the fastest mace weapon plus you can trina parry wiht it.....what i do for my tank is go out and find a bull no armor a smith hammer and a shield and about 1000-2000 bandies and train

well.. from what i seen i dont think u can go wrong on mace... anyhow..
its just based on what your doing i guess basicly u have 2 options....

hammerpick
war hammer

both are good both have advantages... war hammer is slower indeed but it dont miss as much.. but like all things.. different situations call for different things...
hammer pick is nice cause with a shield.. but if u can get away with the extra dmg... a good war hammer is good

hammer pick although.. does better on reactive.. reguardless of what some may say.. thats what i have seen anyways... war hammer does harder wacks.. but hammerpick penetrates more but misses more....

even tho i say miss more.. its not that bad... i dunno.. i just wish swords did as well as mace did.. maces just seem to hit really really good... more often
but, i think at gm level.. on a wepon.. things shouldnt depend on luck so much... misses shouldn't be so frequent..

thats what bruiser always said. but elleb says war axes suck. also i found it interesting a frost elf cleric can gm macing but cant equip a war axe cause its considered a bladed weapon.

I think the real beauty of the war hammer can only be seen with 150+ str. At lower str the war axe seemed more useful. Another bonus of the war axe is that, as Drizzt said, it is bladed, so you can carve corpses with it, without needing to carry a sword, which can sometimes give you swords gains when the monster is cut up too quick after its death.
