i spoke to Ody about helping out the shard, and decided to make a torrent with obsidian installer. I have a slow upload speed but the point was to get obsidian more visible in public. also put your allready downloaded obsidian installer in a map named "Obsidianshard Ultima Online" and choose to download via torrent to that folder, and the download should be about complete ready for seeding! maybe was stupid to upload under a folder but i needed to do that to be able to upload more than 1 file within torrent.

Yeah me and ambient had a wee chat earlier i think the torrent is a great idea and it might work.

On the other hand i have been working my ass of constantly for the past 2 days. I mentioned in a topic about advertising/banner exchange etc.

I have updated the Legion of Valor guildsite, to a much reasonable state. I have registered the site in a ton of search engines, some clan/guild directorys on the web. I have emailed over 30 Guilds belonging to Ultima Online, aswell as gaming forums. I have used the LoV site as a opening to attract new players. I got a reply from a guild who are based in a shard called "Flinthills 3"

Im working my fingers to the bone getting the word of Obsidian to every corner of Ultima Online and i wont rest until ive emailed every clan/guild/gaming site/ game forums around the www. Im not doing this cause i like to spend hours posting emails , creating sites. Im doing it for every player and for the shard.

And i wont rest until i get the word "Obsidian Shard" mentioned on every site related to UO. But i might stop if i get RSI or sumit lawl

... guys .. do *NOT* and I stress *NOT* put a torrent up with Obsidian in the current state it's in... as has been said before, and is basically the story of this shard... When and IF you get new players on here, they are gunna see people whining, bugs, lack of admin, lack of basically anything to do and a lack of other people.. they will do as 90% of most people do.. log on for a week til they stop poofing and quit.

You say you don't care wether they stay or not? well you damn well should because doing this and not getting them to stay is pretty f***** pointless..

It should not be up to the players to save a shard.

shard seems to be in same state as when i started off 7-8 month ago. and im still here as is many others that started after. and no it shouldnt be the players responsibility but if you like something why not share it.

edit: to be honest actually, i started of here first time lke 2½ year ago. i quit back then just after a week or 2. but it wasnt cos i didnt thought good of the shard, it was cos i didnt understood the game all that much. (first time in any UO back then) and i think many players quit cos of that too. to bad i didnt remembered my account details when i restarted, else i would have had 45-50 years chars now with lots of age bonus

Don't say I didn't give you the heads up.. in the 3+ years I've been kicking around here.. torrenting only had one really good time which was because the ADMIN was behind it, not just some random players (sure gives a good first impression).. all other times have brought a small surge of people who WILL quit.. aside from 1-2 who make friends and get helped along/taught teh exploits.

Hmm, while we appreciate the efforts, it is safe to deduce that there is

a) a reasonably finite amount of people interested in mmorpgs

b) a small amount of those interested in UO

c) an even smaller amount of those people that would be interested in Obsidian

Now, imagine the amount of *those* people that actually download the game, install it and play.

Those people are, as said, not particularly likely to keep playing the way Obsidian currently is, because there are issues that need fixing and we need vibrant admin support.

Therefore we can deduce that, from this small pool of potential players (which is not unlimited) we are actually perhaps costing ourselves potential players. What if, 6 months down the line, BB comes in and fixes loads of stuff, staff and player activity doubles, and then there is an official torrent and a big recruitment drive.

What if a large proportion of those people we reach, have already tried Obsidian in the state it *was*, and moved on. In 'glory' times they may have become longstanding players.

It's a hard one to swallow, but the general rule of thumb is that recruitment drives belong when the shard is on an 'up' cycle, not when we are in a temporary period of stasis.

Again, though, we *do* appreciate the efforts. All I'm saying is that they are best saved for when the full admin, staff and player momentum is behind the shard.

I understand what your are saying, we do need admin support more then anything. I also agree like if we get new players now before things are fixed theyll just leave because..well things arnt the way they normally are lol.

So what im gonna do is, ill put the current advertising on pause until the admins get back, i think what ive done in about 4 days is great. I got the word obsidan around ultima online and it will do for time being lol.

Im not like bragging about this but i know we have had torrents and that in the past, but ive approached advertising obsidan in a different way and from my point it seems more successfull, for example i changed the lov site completely and before i did the advertising the ammount of hits i got was in the region between 600-700 now after i have advertised and emailed its reached 1,034 and thats just in 4-5 days.

People might not even join obsidian but im glad that i have let people know it exsists, so im gonna start it up again when the admins get back

And i just pray to god the admins will see what i have done in 4-5 days, and see that obsidian isnt a lost project its got the potential to be great again and we cant do it without their support.
