For some reason Obsidian has ceased to work on my work machine I play on during lunch breaks. The machine runs Windows 2000 Professional. I haven't installed any sort of Microsoft updates, or done anything to the Obsidian folder. I have rebooted. I do not have another version of Ultima Online installed.

I tried un-installing Obs and re-installing. Same error. Running Obsidian.exe in the command prompt produces:

Code: Select all

Obsidian: T4A does not appear to be installed correctly on your system. Please re-install UO by running the setup.exe program located on your CD-ROM
I'm not sure exactly when this started happening, but I do know I was playing Obsidian just fine from here last week. None of the contents of this PC have changed since then.

Could it perhaps be a connection issue? I wouldn't think so.. I typically would get a different error if it was.

Your work machine probably got it's registry locked out.
Which means you'd have to talk to your network admin and ask them to approve the obsidian registry changes.

I am the network admin lmao...

Hmmm at any rate, I'll poke around in regedit tomorrow and see if something looks weird. Worse comes to worse I could just copy the info from regedit on my home machine I guess. :?: Who knows...

OK yeah... I'm sitting here looking at the registry entries. They are there.

Funny, none of my other software just magically stopped working one day.

win2k pro is one of my fav OS's. seeing your registry...everything looks fine (i never use default install paths though). have you tried installing it to a different drive....or just c:\obsidian etc?
the problem you are experiencing is even baffling me. since microsoft creates some weird software that has unexplainable problems that nobody has ever seen before (ive seen my share and google failed to solve) perhaps it could even be .net framework? the client requires one of the versions if i remember and perhaps you have a botched install of it.....im not sure why the client needs it.
does your 2k have SP4 installed? seeing as you are the admin id bet that it does....but im just throwing out ideas. SP4 is a definite must unlike SP3 for XP (always breaks computers). who knows...maybe SP4 fixed some random ninja bug thats preventing obsidian from running properly.

how are you running the exe? a shortcut on your desktop? have you tried running the actual exe?
