As some of your may already know, Obsidian was initially created way back in 1999. CyberVic and myself having been long time UO addicts since the beta decided that we wanted to try our hand at running our own server. Initially it was no more then an experiment and the Obsidian's predecessor launched on a very limited scale with an even smaller scope.

Back before Obsidian became what it is now the world consisted of no more then Ice Isle, Fire Isle and an island town. The expectation was that we'd never have more then a handful of players and likely never be around long enough for such a limited landmass to be an issue. Surprisingly the player base and interest in our shard was more than expected and finally in CyberVic and myself came to the decision that we would try running an entire server of epic scale and scrapped our current work.

By the time December 1999 rolled around we had a stable server, populated and crafted world and were ready to launch into beta. Not knowing how to spread the word as the internet was still in its infancy we began distributing fliers throughout Portland, Oregon. Soon enough people started joining and Obsidian was appearing to be more then just a fly by night shard.

In March 2000, Obsidian left beta and officially launched to the public. Amazingly the hardware was bleeding edge running on a 300MHz Intel Pentium 3 processor with an astounding 128mb ram. All this was accessible via a T-1 line that the server shared at a local ISP.

Since then Obsidian has broken many records among the Ultima Online emulation community. First and foremost we are the longest running shard in the world with the exception of Origin's servers. Additionally we were the first to offer many features from skill caps to races to our rune chamber which has many times been imitated yet never fully duplicated.

i have to say this shard holds a place in my heart i will always remember my time here. i just couldnt stop playing lol so many times i knew i needed to log out and i just couldnt i lost sleep was late for work pissing my wife off etc broadband thank you for letting us play god bless you man.
