Well, I got my new hard drive and Power supply installed in my old computer. I can't really tell a difference with this old motherboard and processor, but the foundation is set the the next phase....which will need to come fast. I just went and bought 2 games only to find out that I can't play them because my current video card don't support shader 3 or some crap......no wonder PC gaming is on it's death bed....I have to shell out a grand just to play a 16 dollar game...it's not a big deal for me, but the people who mostly play video games are folks in their mid teens to lower twenties...that demographic usually don't have $1000 every few years for an upgrade. I hope the PC game industry opens their eyes to this before my favorite game platform turns to dust.

By the way, the next time I get a bug in my ass to upgrade my computer, I'm going to buy a PS3 or 360 instead....I'm almost positive this will be the last desktop I build for myself.

Edit: Just as I was loosing hope in the PC game industry I came across this:

Shader 3 could easily be an option, but these video game companies are in bed with the GPU companies, so they force it on us. Add the unwillingness of the game manufactures to optimize counsel ports, and you end up with a game taking 4 to 5 times more power then it really needs to run...in the end drunk saps like me pay for it. I bought the Assassins Creed PC port this last weekend...it runs just fine on an Xbox 360..which is FAR less powerful then my current system, but my current system freezes up as soon as it starts. If the assholes in charge spent 2 weeks doing some BASIC optizimations, and allowed a few more graphic options, they would have sold a HELL of a lot more games, I would have been able to play the games I bought, and guess what?...I would have upgraded anyway, because I want to see what I'm missing.....now I don't even want to upgrade because I know I'm going to have to do the same crap in another year.

I'm getting another glass of whiskey and going to watch some porn....at least I don't have to upgrade to see tits

the problem with PC games is that each new game need a damn SUPER MACHINE with 1 million of MB of graphic card and the last processor

Ive heard the omega drivers for ATI cards are great, but I have not tried them out yet. The last Nvidia card I bought was the original Ge Force 3 card . My next card was an ATI card that I got a good deal on, or I would have went back to Nvidia. This time I'll stick with ATI...here’s why.....

AMD bought ATI and they’ve brought the same kind of price/performance ratio to GPUs that AMD has brought to CPUs for years. I can get an HD4870 1 Gig graphics card for 179 bucks....the only mainstream cards that are better then this are the 4870X2 (2 GPUs on 1 card) the Nvidia GTX280, and the GTX295 (2 GTX280 chips on 1 board). The 280 is the next cheapest card, giving only 2 to 3% more speed and it’s 150 bucks more expensive. For 30 bucks more then the 280 I can get a 2Gig 4870X2 which is about 40% faster then a 280...the 295 is priced so high above my budget that it's not even an option. When it comes time to upgrade I can get a second 1gig 4870 and crossfire them.

Now AMD makes the chipsets for the motherboards, the CPUs and the GPUs....They are the only single company that makes all three....and they make sure that the 3 play well with each other from the ground up....their systems have broken records for overclocking performance, and they've done it keeping prices within reach of the average gamer. The same performance and scalability in an Intel based system would cost at least 50% more money, and the components would be made from at least 2 if not 3 manufacturers.

This is just my thoughts on it. I’m an AMD fanboy so I’m a little biased…I’m sure the nvidia and intel people have convincing arguments as well.

intel procs are better than amd but not for the money. never had probs with any kind of hardware because i am awesome.

well 3dfx owned me when they sold to nvidia a few months after i bought a voodoo 5. and nvidia let it die and same gen gf card raped it anyways. still managed to do ok with hax drivers for quite a while. still have that thing actually in an old 500mhz. glide game running beast it is.

have a tbird/ati pc that is really nice never gave me probs.

p4/gfti4200 box is still a beast best comp i ever built hands down.

personally i am amdquad/nvidia9800gtx+ right now and happy as shit with my comps performance. its nowhere near the best but does what i want it to.

ive learned that the only thing that matters is just put together a decent current gen comp with plenty of ram, get a high quality ps, and like the second or third best vidcard whatever is just under the crazy high priced one, and ur sorted.

well, I ordered the last of my stuff from newegg this morning.
The final setup:

An AM3 gigabyte motherboard that has 2 PCIe slots for crossfire. I didn't want to go cheep on the motherboard, but I didn't need 4 video card slots, so I changed what I was getting. I decided on the best motherboard I could find that only had 2 slots.

4 Gig of Mushkin DDR ram with he tightest timing I could find, and the best quality for longevity.

AMD quad core Phenom II 810 chip at 2.6Ghz per core. It was the best quad core chip I could find that supported DD3 ram at 1600 Mhz

Sapphire 4870 1gig video card. These 4870s are cheep, so I'll probably end up crossfiring them if I run into any performance issues, but I think I'll be ok with just one.

750 watt silencer Power Supply

150Gig Veloci Raptor Hard drive for my OS and 180Gig 7200RPPM drive for general storage

22X HP DVD/CD burner with Lightscribe

22" 1080P monitor

Once the parts get here I'll find out how well it all works. I don't know what kind of performance I should expect form this, but hopefully it will see me through the nest 3 years or so.
